Assessment Center

An assessment center is a selection stage where several candidates work through practical exercises —group dynamics, business cases, role-play simulations— while a panel of assessors observes their behavior. Instead of asking what you would do, they have you do it. It's common in high-volume processes (trainee programs, banking, consulting) and for leadership roles, almost always in the final stages.

What they evaluate and with which exercises

• Group dynamics: a problem to solve as a team. They measure leadership, listening, collaboration and how you influence without imposing.
• Business cases and in-basket exercises: analyzing information and prioritizing a pile of pending tasks. They measure analysis, judgment and time management.
• Role playing: simulating a negotiation, a customer complaint or a difficult conversation. They measure communication and conflict management.
• Individual presentations: presenting conclusions to the panel. They measure structure and clarity.

Assessors compare what they observe against the role's competencies. The person who talks the most doesn't win: the one who shows the behaviors the profile calls for does.

How to prepare

Find out which competencies the role requires and arrive with your own examples organized with the STAR method: they'll give you language and confidence to act naturally. In group dynamics, participate early, bring structure ("I suggest we define the goal first"), move the group forward and build on other people's ideas. Dominating the conversation or staying silent are the two most penalized mistakes.
